Step up your kids’ space with one of these fresh, stylish color schemes.
"Who doesn’t like a little confetti, right?!" says
J&J Design Group’s
Joanna Gick, who can't get enough of those adorable dots. "They were
the perfect lead to pull in all the colors of the furniture and
pillows," Gick says. If you’re a fan of rainbow color, consider wall
decals like these to tie your colorful space together.
This
color scheme takes cues from everyone’s favorite pollinator. Clean
white brightens the fun, black-and-yellow palette. Add more playful
colors to the mix for a youthful feel, or keep it a bit more
sophisticated with just the three.
This pairing is noteworthy in that it can feel completely kidlike or
totally grownup, depending on how you decorate. This is a major plus for
those of us who are all about a quick decor update — but not so much a
remodel. Here, colorful "PLAY" letters ensure this space leans more
toward a kid-friendly aesthetic. Designer Joanna Gick of
J&J Design Group says the multicolored letters serve as a great juxtaposition to the navy-and-white striped walls.
Deep teal and hot pink create major '80s vibes, especially when paired
with graphic patterns. This color combination is the perfect choice for
kids with spunk; the vibrant, punchy colors offer a launch pad for
creativity. Deep navy and bright white work great to ground the palette.
A classic black-and-white color scheme is chic and timeless, and while
it works anywhere, it’s oh-so-fitting for downtown digs. Play up the
urban feel with a cityscape decal or skyscraper playhouse. Bold, graphic
patterns also work well. A major plus for this palette? It can grow
with your kid, eliminating the need to paint every few years.
Designers Joanna Gick and Jennifer O'Dowd of
J&J Design Group
based the colors for this room on a peppy, super hero-print bedding.
Gick suggests the palette of Kelly green, navy and red for any super
hero-inspired space. She also suggests a cityscape wall mural as the
perfect backdrop for this type of design.
Black and white is a pairing so lovable, it deserves a second mention.
Instead of taking cues from the city, though, this play space takes a
more whimsical approach. Zoo animals bring the classic combo to life,
making the otherwise harsh contrast feel exciting and kid friendly. To
get this look, embrace dainty lines and quirky accents — and don’t be
afraid to incorporate small touches of soft color.
Looking to infuse your kids’ space with energy? Citrus hues are the way
to go. Here, grapefruit, lemon and tangerine tones offer zingy
personality to the light-filled space. Clean white pairs well with the
fresh-squeezed palette.
When aiming for a more sophisticated kids’ space, try choosing deep,
subdued color tones, like the moody blues in this toddler’s nook. Use a
variation of the same color to keep your space interesting, and balance
that color with a calming neutral.
Raspberry pairs with blueberry for a delectable combination in this girl’s room. Designer
Sara Touijer
says the pairing works well thanks to the purple undertones found in
the two colors. When working with this palette, be sure to incorporate
plenty of texture for richness and warmth.
